Yamaha looks like preparing another move in the small-displacement segment, with the addition of some more naked bikes to the roster. Apparently Yamaha is already testing a naked version of the R25 on the streets of India, if we are to believe certain low-res photos which have appeared in online media lately. Still, these spy shots are of very poor quality and it’s really next to impossible to tell anything with a decent degree of certainty based on them.
However, the guys at Motoblast have not been idling and delivered a rendering of what the naked version of the R25 might look like. The pictured bike could effortlessly receive the MT/FZ badge and join the family, well, mostly because the rendered machine was largely derived from the MT-07 bike. Anyway, this is what we actually expect from Iwata, a proper extension of the MT range and not yet another design, right?

What may be MT-25 in Asia might become MT-03 in western markets

While the news of a new naked quarter-liter bike is of course going to make riders in Asia very happy, there is something to it which should bring a smile to their fellows in Europe and North America. Namely, Yamaha is selling the R25 in Asia and the (YZF) R3 in the mentioned markets… so it would only be natural that after the MT-25, the MT-03 arrived, too.

Such a move would expand the number of MT bikes to 4, covering the hottest segments of the business. The entry-point MT-125 being a cool choice for first-timers and those in search of fun, cheap commuters and who would not get a scooter, a potential MT-03 would add even more choices to motorcyclists who need more power from their bikes. At the other end, the MT-07 is the naked bike choice for the intermediate segment, complemented by the MT-09 top-of-the-line beast for the experienced riders who can handle such a bike without problems.

And finally, a naked MT-03 would also give Yamaha an edge in the small-displacement fray, especially as Honda seems to play things well with the CB300F model. Something tells us that we won’t have to wait until EICMA 2015 to see the naked sibling of the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3…
