Slowly but surely, we’re getting to find out the true potential of the brand new 4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that Mercedes-Benz developed. With slight variations, this has been used by two production cars, the C63 AMG (sedan and wagon) and the bespoke AMG GT coupe. But more are coming, including SUVs.
When dyno tested by many companies, the downsized mill was revealed as having slightly more power than Mercedes claims. However, a company called DTE-Systems has managed to extract 590 PS, 80 more than standard.
In stock form, the C63 S sedan delivers 510 PS and 700 Nm of torque (516 lb-ft). Those numbers have been increased to 590 PS and 816 Nm (602 lb-ft) of torque. These gains are modest when compared to those we’ve seen with the 5.5-liter of the S63, but these are early days.
Revealed last year at the Paris Motor Show, the W205 C63 shows that it no longer wants to be an uncontrollable monster, taking a more leisurely, GT-like approach to performance. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s slow in any way.
The basic models, which come with a 476 PS version of the engine we mentioned, do the standard sprint to 100 km/h in only 4.1 seconds while the S versions take just 4 seconds. These class-leading numbers are accompanied by a barrage of V8 sounds and the swift cog-changing action of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. Ceramic brakes, central locking wheels and active exhaust are just some of the major highlights.
