Ducati 1199 Panigale Receives Compasso d'Oro Design Award

Ducati 1199 Panigale receives the prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award. Compasso d’Oro is Italy’s most revered award in the industrial design field, and is presented every three years by ADI, the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale, celebrating Italian design excellence.

The 3-year cycle between each edition of the Compasso d’Oro awards makes the battle even fiercer, as the judges have to sort through an immense number of applications. The 2014 edition was the 23rd ceremony of the Compasso d’Oro, with over 270 products making it to the final stage. The entries are judged by a panel of experts which select the most significant and praise-worthy products, and this year they decided that the 1199 Panigale is the best product among all, for “having transferred competition level performance to an elegant mass-production model that is still consistent with the brand’s traditional image”.

Believe it or not, the Ducati 1199 Panigale is the first-ever motorcycle to receive this high distinction and make it into the Compasso d’Oro Collection. With a tradition spanning across more than 60 years, the Compasso d’Oro has induced over 300 products in its historical Collection, but no bike has ever been able to reach the ultimate goal. The Collection also includes more than 2000 other products selected for “honorable mentions”. The Collection is also included in the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage’s official points of interest list as being of “exceptional artistic and historical interest”.

The Ducati 1199 Panigale is the successor of the 1198 model, and is powered by an 1198cc Desmodromic L-twin engine which delivers 195 horsepower @ 10,750 rpm and 132Nm (98.1 lb-ft) at 9,000 rpm. Unlike most other older Ducati machines, the 1199 Panigale comes with a wet multiplate clutch with slipper and self-servo functions. The frame has a monocoque aluminum architecture rolling with 10-spoke wheels and Marzocchi/ Sachs front/rear suspensions. The S and R versions are equipped with 3-spoke wheels, Ohlins NIX30 forks, and Ohlins TTX36 rear shock absorbers. The S and R versions are also the lightest, tipping the scales at 166.5 kg dry (367 lbs).

“Founded in 1954, the ADI Compasso d'Oro is the world's longest established and most influential design award. Developed from an idea by Gio Ponti, it was first organized by the Rinascente department store group with the aim of highlighting the value and quality of early Italian-designed products. In 1964, ADI became responsible for its organization, supervising its impartiality and integrity,” Ducati sources mention.

The Compasso d’Oro is not the only design award for the 1199 Panigale. The bike also received the Red Dot Award in 2013. Follow the link for more hi-res photos of the 1199 Panigale.
