Drifting the New BMW M4

Not even a week passed since the new M4 was handed over to a hoard of journalists in Portugal and other places of the world and videos of various people drifting it are already online.

As all M3 Sedan and Coupe models before it, the new M4 also inherited the appetite for drifting and, as it seems, it’s a master at doing all sorts of activities that involve burning rubber.

The guys from Autoblog Holland were rather privileged and were allowed to do whatever they wanted with their test car. Of course, going sideways was one of them and, luckily, they had a camera with them.

You should also know that when the engineers developed the new cars, they wanted to address a couple of issues people pointed out about the previous generations.

First of all, they made sure drivers can drift now, implementing the so-called ‘Smokey Burnout’ feature that allows you to do burnouts from a standstill. In order to do so, you just have to deactivate all active traction control systems, get the car in Sport Plus mode and floor it. Plenty of smoke will arise from the rear wheels and you will get ahead in the least efficient way.

It might not seem like much, but on the LCI E92 M3 models fitted with the 7-Speed DCT gearboxes, it was impossible to do such a stunt. That’s because BMW wanted to protect both its drivers and the transmission of the car. You can see the Smokey Burnout function in action in the beginning of the clip below.

The M4 was also thought out to have a sharp throttle response and be as easy to handle as possible, allowing you to put it exactly where you want to. For such purposes, the driveshaft was made out of CFRP and the electric power steering was redesigned from the ground up.

The end result is a super sharp car that can be thrown on a track even as challenging as the Green Hell and it will do just find, keeping a smile on your face all day long. That’s exactly how the face of the driver in the video below must’ve looked like throughout the shooting.
