Children, you shouldn’t be afraid of that big mouth shown in the image above. The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro won’t eat you alive, it will just devour your father’s car at the drag strip.
That’s what happens when a stock Camaro pulls 11s runs, which is what we expect the new ZL1 to do. Sure, the ZL1 we used to know took 12.2 seconds to complete the quarter mile. And while that’s not slow by any means, it might seem that way now that a 2016 Camaro SS can play the quarter mile trick in 12.3 seconds.

Will it be a high- or a mid-11s run? It’s a bit early to talk about that, but an important role here will be played by the LT4 supercharged 6.2-liter V8. The ZL1 is expected to share this engine with the Corvette Z06 and the Cadillac CTS-V.

Nevetheless, we’re not sure about the output level. The engine has been tuned to deliver 650 HP in the ‘Vette, but we can’t bet it will go over 600 when hiding under the Camaro’s bonnet.

After all, the new Alpha platform should bring a weight loss of about 200 lbs, so the new model won’t rely on muscle alone in its quest for sprinting.

You won’t mistake this for an SS

These spyshots allow us to get a better view of the ZL1 prototype, with the camouflage getting thinner.

While we’ve already mentioned the gaping air intake, the frontal area of the car will also announce the vehicle’s go-fast intentions thanks to the heat extractor placed on the hood.

More exuberant rocker panels, new double-spoke wheels, as well as a meatier rear spoiler and more aggressive exhaust tips complete the scenery.

This story could become a reality as soon as the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January. For one thing, the schedule would mean that, by this time next year, we’ll be able to get behind the thick steering wheel.
